As discussed below, most ranchers focus on what their animals weigh at sale. Counter-intuitively, that thinking leads to lower profits. Ranchers should focus on pounds of beef produced per acre per year, not pounds of beef per animal. 

By raising smaller animals, graziers can increase the number of animals per acre. Smaller animals mature faster than large animals. In combination, more animals maturing faster means more beef production and profitability.
